How to solve the shortage of semiconductor talents?

Data show that a country's semiconductor manufacturing capacity is expected to triple between 2022 and 2032. But behind the prosperity lies a huge worry: the industry is seriously short of engineers and technicians.
Semiconductors are functional materials with conductivity between conductors and insulators. Its core feature is that its conductivity can be precisely controlled by doping, temperature or light.

Typical representatives include elemental semiconductors such as silicon and germanium, and compound semiconductors such as gallium arsenide and silicon carbide. They form N-type/P-type semiconductors by doping impurities such as phosphorus or boron. This enables intelligent control of the direction and intensity of current.

This "programmable" conductive property makes semiconductors the cornerstone of the modern electronics industry. Semiconductor materials use integrated circuit technology in many areas. This includes mobile phone processors, LED lighting, and solar cells. They create microcircuits made up of billions of transistors.

It realizes core functions such as data storage, signal processing and energy conversion. Its application has expanded from traditional electronic products to new energy vehicles, medical imaging and aerospace communications. At present, semiconductors have become the key material carrier to promote the digital revolution.

The 2024 report shows that about 115,000 new jobs will be added by 2030. It is expected that 67,000 of these jobs, or 58%, will have trouble finding workers.
At present, the labor market of a certain country is short of about 27,300 engineers and 26,400 technicians. This talent gap could harm the return on investment. It may also threaten the security of a country's chip manufacturing.

The executive director of a foundation spoke about the semiconductor industry. They said it is "almost invisible" to engineering students. This makes it hard for students to consider it when choosing a career.

A top global semiconductor equipment maker is often called "the most important but unknown company." The whole industry needs to raise public awareness. People must understand that progress in many fields relies on semiconductor technology.

To attract engineers, the industry must connect semiconductor engineering with exciting areas like AI, sports cars, and space travel. It also needs to improve pay and benefits. The 2024 study shows that engineers think the semiconductor industry has low pay, little flexibility, and few learning opportunities. To compete with venture-backed startups, semiconductor companies must offer more competitive compensation packages and increase flexible work arrangements and career development opportunities.

In terms of technical personnel training, new manufacturing facilities need to invest in local talent training programs. Trainees get on-the-job training as full-time employees. They also attend weekly classes and work with local unions on training programs.

The semiconductor talent gap will not disappear overnight. To reach their goals, companies must act now. They need to change the industry's image.
They should improve salary competitiveness. It is important to set up a good training system.
Companies must also develop technical talent for the future. Experts say young engineers need to understand how important semiconductor work is for a country's innovative economy.
